Houndstooth or Herringbone stitch
I did get a request on how to do this stitch, so the first thing I did was do a search online and guess what….not a lot out there about how to do this stitch, why….I don’t know??? Next I decided to find out what exactly is the difference between the two. Below are the explanations that I found:
Herringbone
A twill fabrication with a pattern made up of rows of parallel lines in opposite directions forming a zigzag pattern.
Houndstooth
A usually small, distinctively broken-check pattern that resembles the jagged back teeth of a hound.
In my opinion, and of course by the two above explanations, my two samples are probably considered “Houndstooth” but don’t worry I will certainly be continuing this with another sample of a “Herringbone”.

This first sample is the easiest to do but as you can see in the above picture, it does have a right and wrong side.
It is based on a multiple of 5 + 2 (add 1 for beginning turning chain) What does this mean ? You will need a beginning chain that you can divide 5 into evenly (say 20), once you get that number add 2 more (22) , now add 1 for your beginning chain (23 chains).
Row 1: With Color A, ch 23, dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in remaining 20 chains. (22 dc, remember the skipped chains at the beginning count as your first dc) ch 1 turn.
Row 2: sc in each dc across , change to color B , ch 2 turn(this ch 2 counts as your first dc)
Row 3: dc in next 3 sc, long front post dc in 5th dc 2 rows below. Skip next sc on current working row, *dc in next 3 sc, long front post dc in 4th dc from previous long front post dc. Dc in next 3 sc*, repeat from * to * until you have only 2 sc left, lfpdc in 4th dc from previous lfpdc, dc in last stitch. Ch 1 turn.
Row 4: sc in top of each stitch across, change to color A, ch 2 turn.
Row 5: dc in next sc, long front post dc in 3rd dc 2 rows below. Skip next sc on current working row, *dc in next 3 sc, long front post dc in 4th dc(count lfpdc as a dc) from previous long front post dc*, repeat from * to * until you have only 3 sc left, dc in last 3 stitches. Ch 1 turn.
Row 6: sc in top of each stitch across. Change to color B, ch 2 turn.
Repeat Rows 3 to 6 for desired length.
